What Is Cybersecurity Management? Why Do Organisations Need It?

What is cybersecurity management? It is an IT area organisations and businesses use to protect sensitive data from cybercriminals or uninvited guests. This is a simple explanation of cybersecurity management, which may include protecting organisation’s information systems and computer networks from cyberattacks, cyber threats, intrusions, malware, and other types of data breaches.

What Is Cybersecurity Management? Why Does Everybody Need It?

Cybersecurity management include technologies and practices that keep computer networks and electronic data safe. In the world where business and lives are spent increasingly online, cybersecurity management becomes indispensable. A report by Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) states ‘Cybersecurity is the art of protecting networks, devices, and data from unauthorized access or criminal use and the practice of ensuring confidentiality, integrity, and availability of information’.

Types of Cybersecurity

These are general types of cybersecurity.

Application Security

The aim is to protect data or code within the app against theft. The security measurement was incorporated during application development, but it is now designed to protect application after VMWare’s lead.

Cloud Security

Cloud security refers to technologies and processes protecting cloud environment from internal and external threats. The system is designed to prevent unauthorised access and to safeguard data and applications on the cloud against cyberattacks.

Infrastructure Security

During COVID-19 pandemic, both big and small organisations faced challenges in protecting IT infrastructure. The infrastructure has higher social impact than people usually think. It prevents physical effects to economy, healthcare, and public security. Damages to IT infrastructure do not come from the systems alone. Regardless of how expensive cybersecurity solution is , if personnel is not fully equipped, organisations can fall victim to cyberattacks at any time.

Internet of Things (IoT) Security

IoT is the concept of connecting devices to the Internet. According to IBM, they are connected networks of things and people. All of which collect and share data. These devices include appliances, sensors, TVs, routers, printers, and countless network devices in your household. Protecting security of these devices are important. According to Bloomberg, security is one of major challenges to IoT adoption.

Network Security

Network security protects network infrastructure against unauthorised access, breaches, or thefts. According to CISCO, it involves creating security infrastructure for devices, applications, and users to work together in a secure manner.

What Is Cybersecurity?

Why Is Cybersecurity Management Important

Now, getting hacked is not only a direct threat to confidential data, but also to relationships with customers. It could put them in legal risks. With new technologies come new cyber threats – be it self-drive car to smart home security connected to the Internet. Cyberattacks will only become more dangerous.

Unsurprisingly, an international research and consulting firm, Gartner, forecasts that global cybersecurity market will grow to reach 170 billion dollars in 2022, 8.5% jump within 1 year.

“We are seeing a tremendous demand for cyber security practitioners’, said Jonathan Kamyck, associate dean of cyber security at Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU). ‘Most businesses, whether they’re large or small, will have an online presence, for example. Some of the things you would do in the old days with a phone call or face-to-face now happen through email or teleconference, and that introduces lots of complicated questions with regard to information”

Today, protecting confidential data is a pressing matter for both public and private sectors. State secrets may be stolen from other side of the world. Organisations whose model is based on customer information can be attacked. A scandalous case occurred in 2017. Equifax, a credit bureau, was breached. Records of 147.9 Americans, or about half the population, were compromised.
